The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for
human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote
socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of
providing adequate shelter for all.

In order to strengthen UN-Habitat’s urban environmental portfolio, UN-Habitat
reinforced its commitment to environmental action in its new Strategic Plan
2020-2023. Domain of Change 3 now focuses on “Strengthened climate action and
improved urban environment”, with 3 sub-priorities: 1 Reduced greenhouse
emissions and improved air quality; 2 Improved resource efficiency and
protection of ecological assets; 3 Effective adaptation of communities and
infrastructure to climate change. This internship position focuses
particularly on sub-priority 2 on the protection of ecological assets.

The UN-Habitat Urban Environment Intern internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week 35 hours under the supervision of a staff
member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the
intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of a staff member from the Urban Planning and Design
branch the intern will support the program of the urban environmental
portfolio in the following manner:
– Engage in desk research on cutting edge new topics in the urban
environmental field, including – but not limited to – urban forestry;
ecosystems restoration in cities; coastal urban resilience; resilience action
planning; blue economy strategies for cities; urban rivers and wetlands;
settlements vulnerability; resource efficiency; urban biodiversity protection
and conservation; green and blue networks in cities; and more.
– Help prepare background documents and communications pieces for events,
especially in the context of the 10th World Urban Forum.
– Support the strengthening of ongoing collaborations with UN-Habitat partners
on green and blue economy and the urban environment with UNEP, GGGI, WIOMSA,
Nairobi Convention, Tehran Convention, WWF, etc.
– Assist the team in the development of publications, project documents,
concept notes and more.
– Support the team in the write-up of funding proposals on urban environmental
themes.
– Support joint meetings and engagements between UN-Habitat and UN
Environment.
– Assist the team in the day-to-day project implementation.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to
keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or
setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to
client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following
requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme second university degree or
equivalent, or higher.
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program
minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent.
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the
internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a
personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of
different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try
and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study:
Be currently enrolled in a graduate Masters or post-graduate PhD
programme. The preferred subject areas are Sustainable Urban development,
Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Management, Water Management,
Resource Management, Political Science, Economics, other social sciences or
other relevant areas.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations
Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is
required. Knowledge of at least one other official UN language is desirable.
